Recycle your Ribbon Spools!

Posted by Deena on April 20, 2008

I know we all have a lot of these…ribbon spools! When your ribbon is used up what do you do with the empty spool? How many have you thrown away?? Instead of throwing the next one out… try something like this with it!

This is so easy and fun to do, and it makes a perfect little gift box for something special! Or just use it yourself to keep a few special pairs of earrings, or rings…

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Empty Ribbon spool
  • Toilet paper roll or paper towel roll
  • Stamped or decorative papers
  • Embellishments for the Lid
  • Adhesive
  • circle cutter

First I carefully pulled apart the spool. The top round and bottom round pieces pretty easily came away from the middle spool piece. They tore a little, but I was covering it with dp, so no worries!

I then measured the height (depth) of the inner spool cylinder. I cut a piece off the toilet paper roll, a bit narrower than the depth of the spool cylinder.

Using my circle cutter, I cut dp to fit and cover both sides of the top and bottom of the cylinder piece. Then I calculated the circumference of the cylinder (diameter x 3.14) and cut a strip of dp to cover the outside. I did the same for the toilet paper roll piece. I then glued this piece to the top circle to make the lid. It could now snugly insert into the bottom spool area.

When everything was covered with dp I added the beads, gem brad and prima to the top.

I also sponged any raw edges with a bit of Blue Bayou ink.

I used Chrystal Effects as glue! It is very strong and works like a charm on embellishments! It dries quickly too.

All the dp used on this project is Stampin’ UP! Porcelain Prints.
